Effectiveness of Weapon spec:
1 to 2/3rds of level = 25-100% dmg
2/3rds to 100% of level = 75-125% dmg
100%+ = 100-150% dmg
That scale is linear.
Your damage continues to grow if your weapons spec is above your level, but slower.
I believe each weapon spec point above your level adds about 0.66% to your damage.
How stats affect weapons:
Albion
Slash = 100% Str
Crush = 100% Str
Thrust = 50/50 Str/Dex
Polearm = 100% Str
Twohanded = 100% Str
Staffs = 100% Dex
Shield = 100% dex
Hibernia
Blades = 100% Str
Blunt = 100% Str
Pierce = 50/50 Str/Dex
Celtic spear = 100% Str
Staffs = 100% Dex
Shield = 100% Dex
Midgard
Axes = 100% Str
Swords = 100% Str
Hammers = 100% Str
Spears = 50/50 Str/Dex
Staffs = 100% Dex
Shield = 100% dex
Damage Calculation
Damage = WeapDmg (which is a possibly capped weapon DPS) * Delay * Quality * Condition * (WeapSkill / Target’s AF)
Also, there is an interesting formula for the effective AF of a piece of armor:
Effective AF = Listed AF * Quality * (1 + (absorb * quality))
Notice the quality double-dipping which makes it extra important for armor.
It has been discussed around and around, and though i haven’t tested it, i’ve concluded that those who say Celtic Spear is 100% Str-based are correct. Are they wrong? Have you tested this and found it to be 50/50 Str/Dex like the Hunter spear line is?
You might mention Flex (50/50?) and Shields used offensively (100% Dex?). And that Polearms, LW, and 2H are Str-based.
Also, i am uncertain where in your formula for weapon damage calculation the relevant character stat(s) come into play. Is it (Str or Dex or a mix) hidden in WeaponSkill?
I’m curious how that’s calculated, and to see a list of the damage tables for different classes, which i am guessing may also be part of that WeaponSkill number. I keep hearing people say things like ‘Wardens/Minstrels/Paladins hit like a wet noodle because their damage table is blah blah blah’ and though partly their issue is that they’re (except a 2H Pally) only wielding one one-handed weapon, the way people say it i interpret as meaning there’s some other factor related to the class itself.
Great to see all the updates to your site. I noticed the class resists page has much more info now. You rock.
Hi Anomie
Almost all this information is gathered through years of forum discussions back on live, so there is going to be differences between that and freeshards. It is unfortunately impossible to get correct information.
I think weapon skill includes all character specific stats if we look at how the weapon skill differs from pure tanks to hybrids. So there is a difference in weapon skill for a minstrel with 29 slash to a armsman with 26 slash and both are highlanders with 100 str. Making such a table will be time consuming 🙂
Thanks for the kind words and I will add the weapons.
Kind regards
Mads
Yes it would be very time consuming!
I just found a page which does nothing to explain any formulae, and it is relevant to a much more recent patch level than 1.65, but it does suggest that there are different multipliers related to which class/weapon combination is considered.

Unfortunately the Web Archive doesn’t have an earlier version of this page saved.
Hope you are well,
