Codesys Runtime PLC Logfiles

Codesys Runtime PLC Logfiles

A PLC running a Codesys runtime has multiply logifles, all depending on where you look for them. Generally there is 3 places to find logfiles.

  • Codesys IDE online on a PLC
  • Codesys WBM Web Based Management
  • Secure shell access to the Linux OS

Codesys IDE Logfiles

Doubleclick on your PLC device in the IDE. Enter communication settings and go online. Go to tab Log and hit the small green refresh icon. You now get a list of messages from different Codesys components.

Codesys WBM Logfiles

Enter the IP adress or hostname of your PLC, in a web browser. Log into the Web Based Management (WBM). Go to the diagnostics tab and hit the red Refresh button. This logfile is limited to a higher level of reporting, than the logfile found in the IDE. Less lines. Less details.

Linux OS logfiles

A range of different logfiles is saved in the Linux OS and saved on disk. To access these files you need to use a FTP client or SCP, to download the files through Secure Shell (SSH).

I normally use PuTTY for accessing SSH services in different devices. PuTTY has a built in command, to download files through SSH. This is not a command in PuTTY program itself, but has to be called in a Windows commando prompt.

First set up the environmental variable, to be able to call the PSCP command. Navigate to the folder of your PuTTY isntalaation.

set PATH=C:\Program Files\PuTTY;%PATH%

Now enter the following command, with PASSWORD, USER and folders adjusted to your local credentials and settings.

pscp -pw PASSWORD USER@IPADDRESS:/var/log/* c:\temp

This will download the contents of the /var/log/ folder to your local c:\temp folder.
